The number of single people in Belgium is increasing. No wonder, because there are loads of advantages to being single. Here are the ten most enjoyable aspects of a single existence.

1. YOU SLEEP BETTER

Lack of sleep is one of the evils of our time. As a single person, you sleep better , because there is no fidgeting or snoring partner next to you, or with whom to fight for the blankets. You also won’t be woken up if your partner has to get up earlier.

2. NO TRAFFIC JAM IN THE BATHROOM

In families, especially with teenagers, there is a queue in the morning in front of the bathroom. As a single person, you have this realm all to yourself. And no one will scold you for forgetting to close the cap on the toothpaste tube.

3. YOU READ THE NEWSPAPER QUIETLY

‘Say, put away this tablet , we’re having lunch’. These are words you will never hear if you are single. You read the news whenever you want, with your croissants and your coffee.

4. YOU EAT WHAT YOU WANT

As a single person, you eat casually every day: there will never be something on the menu that you don’t like. You prepare it as you wish, or order it from the take away home delivery person of your choice.

5. YOU EXERCISE WHENEVER YOU WANT

As a single person, you are not bound to a certain routine. The sun is shining and you feel like taking a short bike ride or going for a run? You will not have to negotiate with anyone. Put on your gym clothes and you’ll be gone.

6. YOU LISTEN AND WATCH WHAT YOU WANT

Tonight the new series on Netflix, or rather this extreme horror film ? As a single person, you watch what you like and put on the music you want, even if it’s a guilty pleasure . And you can sing along – no one will laugh at you.

7. YOU HAVE A BIGGER NETWORK

The social network of cohabiting couples is smaller than that of single people – especially if there are children. As a single person, you keep in touch with as many people as you want, and there will never be a pesky partner who thinks ‘you go out with your friends a little too often’.

8. YOU TRAVEL LIGHTER

Traveling as a couple or as a family requires a lot of organization. As a single person, you pack your suitcase or backpack and set off for the destination of your dreams. It’s also much easier to make last minute deals when you only need one place. OK, there is currently corona, but couples and families are also suffering from it.

9. YOU DO LESS HOUSEWORK

It may sound weird, but a single person spends less time a week doing boring household chores like cleaning and washing up, even if he (or she) is alone to deal with them. There are two reasons for this: firstly, your home gets dirty less quickly, so you have to clean less often. Then, it seems that among couples, cleanliness standards are often higher. Couples therefore spend hours until their home meets these fairly strict standards. But they are crazy!

10. YOU ARE LESS STRESSED

There’s hardly a single couple where one partner doesn’t chafe at the other’s little flaws – often resulting in arguments over trivial matters. It uses mentally. As a single person, you will not suffer from this kind of stress.
